It's Never Happened to Me Before!

This past Saturday I decided to head out an do a race at a new local race series that's being put on, the Front Range Mountain Bike Series . Basically it's a short track mountain bike race that's twice as long as normal, which means it's a cyclocross races with no dismounting (somthing I think I can do). I wanted to test the legs, see if I could hold on for the entire race and have fun. More importantly it was being held in essentially "my back yard." It was so much fun, I would highly recommend this race series to everyone, the promoters are doing a great job out there and they deserve our support. Mountain biking, in the city, in the spring... you have to go!

Six degrees to slush was out taking some great photos and got some great shots of me in my race, so I will use them as a photo show of how the race went.

First I warmed up, trying to stay out of the way of the racers.

Then we lined up. (Damn that TER kit looks good)

And we're off, I tried to stay off the front but near the front. Just relaxing.

The first climb up the hill I was sitting in 4 or 5th place. Just trying to stay out of trouble.

Heading back up the climb in a good place, but a few of the leaders were showing signs of fatigue.

I wasn't going to wait so, I punched it. On only the second lap. I had three chasers. It felt early so I tried to ride smart and not blow up. I had 5 more laps to go!

All the way to the finish line for my first victory. I road the Cannondale 29er with the Lefty locked out almost the entire time. The bike was sweet, powerful and let me rip it up. It felt good. Time to upgrade for the next race. This is a good start to the rest of the Cyclocross pre-season!

A snowy alternative

Remember when you loved it when it snowed? As a kid waking up and looking out the window to see a fresh blanket of pure fun. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the fresh white stuff, but for me it is better to be falling on Mary Jane than on the roads or bike paths around Denver. My lack of enthusiasm for the snow stems from the little voice in my head that reminds me “if you want to compete, you have to train”. The problem is, my trainer is evil. It doesn’t help that I have a mental picture of it that resembles some sort of medieval torture device in a dungeon designed for a criminal that won’t give up details of a diabolical plot. Sorry for the dramatic interludes, but to me, the trainer is the worst, I use it, but with trepidation.

Solution, my new sport B: skate skiing

First off, my wife skate skis - so no persuading to come along and no exaggerated justifications for buying sweet equipment. When jumping into another sport or hobby, spousal buy-in makes a huge difference. So with new equipment we headed up to Devil’s Thumb Ranch last weekend. DT is a 5000+ acres of trails with hilly, flat and rolling terrain. There are incredible views of the Divide and open pastures. And best of all, you could go for hours without seeing anyone else on the trail. Anybody who has spent time at Eldora Nordic Center knows about jockeying for trail space. If you just go for the day, remember to ask for the TER discount which saves you $5 per lift ticket. This makes the day cheaper than Eldora and Snow Mountain Ranch.

If you have never skate skied, by the end of the day you can get the technique down, after a couple of times you can get darn fast.

What: American Cycling Association Awards Party

There are several TER members receiving awards this year. Basic Points for Safe, Fun and Fast Group Riding

Robin, Lew and Jason (Big Ring Cycles) worked on this list of basic points related to group riding prior to last Saturday’s skills clinic. There’s a lot of great new information here for beginners and it’s also a nice refresher for the seasoned vet. They obviously put a lot of time into this, so remember to thank them next time you see them.

Never and Always

NEVER! - Brake suddenly! Signal that you may be slowing so riders behind are aware.

NEVER! - Pass on the right!

NEVER! - Ride more than 2 abreast!

NEVER! - Ride the group into road dangers!

NEVER! – Overlap wheels!

ALWAYS! - Hold your line! When riding in a group, you must always ride a straight line-- and if you are pulling off or veering from that "line" never do so without looking back first and/or signaling where you are moving to. ALWAYS! - Point out holes, trash, ice, and anything else in the road that riders behind you should be aware of.

Group Riding Pointers

Communicate – if someone has a mechanical issue or is heading back early let others know. Assist others whenever possible, you’ll appreciate the favor sometime too!

Consistent pacing – be predictable Calling "off" - if you are getting gapped, let others stronger help you regroup. Regroup - at the crest of hills, take a look back and regroup for stragglers.

Maintain access to brakes - if you’re not group ride experienced, ride on the hoods (not drops or tops).

Ride single file - if cars are behind you and you are holding them up on curvy, hilly, narrow roads.

Overlapping wheels when drafting - back off slowly. If you do contact another rider don't make any sudden motions, stay straight since over-correcting causes most accidents, not bumping into another rider.

Standing - announce it. Most riders drop speed when they stand on hills or flats Avoid road hazards - try to avoid things in the road by 18" or more.

Use hand signals -If you are slowing down use a signal and be close to the shoulder, some folks don't realize someone has been behind them the whole time.

Pass the signal down the pace line - since most are not watching the front line.

Keep your eyes up at all times so you can see what is happening. Avoid looking at the ground in front of you or the rear wheel of the rider ahead of you.

Look where you want to head, not at the obstacle you want to avoid.

Don't look down at the front wheel. To look just ahead of the front wheel results in frequent steering corrections that translate into wobbles that makes you lose your line.

Pace Lines

Steady speed is best - no sprints, tapping brakes or stopping pedaling. There are no awards for showing how fast you are that day!

Always maintain a space - between your front wheel and the rear wheel of the rider ahead of you 1-2 feet, after 6 feet you have no draft effect. Avoid wheel overlap! The exception to this in left or right echelons on windy days on wide shoulders. Wave them in or tell a rider to jump in to get group back together if you are cooked.

Protect yourself - be slightly off to one side of the pace line (left is best) so you can see what is ahead. This is especially true when you have not practiced with the riders. This means that your head is out not your entire bike.

Always look at the head, arms and shoulders of the rider in front of you. This gives you the best indication of a quick turn or change in direction usually associated with debris or obstacles. Most riders will look left or right before they make a move.

Maintain a constant speed in a consistent direction of motion. That is, no surging (fast - slow: the bungee cord effect) and no weaving (unpredictable direction of travel).

Never suddenly slow or attempt any stop without a hand and voice signal first. Huge cause of pile ups!

Maintain your speed when pulling off the front of the pace line then soft pedal to back of line, drop to one easier gear.

Keep cadence at 90+ rpms and above all the time to avoid getting dropped and allows for sprinting if you need to "close the gap".

Last rider announces they are the end rider before they reach you at the end as it allows them to start pedaling to stay on pace.

If you see a pace line gapping- you can drop in to help the other rider if you are feeling strong.

If a gap opens up and you cannot catch your group, form another smaller pace line to catch up.

If you get major gaps forming often the pace is too high or riders are not drafting close enough to each other.

The pace leader controls the speed and should be able to slow done for regroup or increase pace once a good pace line form is achieved.

Pace leader should announce overtaking other non-pace line riders and give wide berth to others groups or form a single file if there is no room for both groups.

Left side of pace line is the fastest – Pace line chains require more riders riding in two parallel lines. The line of riders on the left will always be traveling faster than the line of riders on the right. The object is to form a chain of riders who are in a draft no matter which line the riders are in.

Shorts pulls off the front - Each new ride leader is only pulling for five to 10 seconds. New riders or weaker/tired may not pull at all and may drop back to next slower pace group if they cannot hang on.

Pace line Technique - As a rider in the left line reaches the front of the left line, he passes just beyond the lead rider of the right line and then moves to the right creating a draft for the right line. A new left line leader appears and the old left line leader (now in the right line) slows to match the speed of the right line, which is continually falling back. Typically, the left line leader is only pulling for about five to 10 seconds, while passing and moving over to the right. Within another five to 10 seconds, the new right line leader (the old left line leader) is now in the draft created by the new leader who is passing and moving over in front of you. Your exposure at the front is together about 10 to 20 seconds. For the most part, all riders are in a draft.

A group is always faster than a solo rider. Pace line chains can reach and sustain speeds or long periods and are always faster than solo riders. With >12 riders, the pace line chain becomes very effective and efficient. When the group gets too large, rider strength variation will cause deterioration in the groups' efforts.

Interview with Brian Dallas of Focus Bikes

If you raced cross this year, you may have noticed the fleet of uber bling lined-up under the Focus tent. If you stopped drooling for a second and refocused, you may have noticed the guy in charge of these bikes and if you were lucky, you may have talked a bit of shop. That guy is Brian Dallas, a UCI Pro Tour Mechanic and a Focus Bicycles rep and his cycling cred is extensive. Here’s a selection from his ‘History of Skills’: Head Mechanic for ValueAct Capital, Mechanic for Kelly Benefit Strategies and Tour of California Mavic Special Service Course mechanic. He is also the rep for one of our team bikes this year, Focus, which makes him a good person to know.

Ever wonder what it’s like to ride behind the peloton as a head mechanic? What’s it like to hang-out the side of car and fix a derailleur at 35 MPH? After watching this year’s Giro (see this) I realized there is more to mechanics than just wrenching. I asked Brian to answer these questions and a few more.

First off, let’s get a few things out of the way.

Tubular or clincher? Campy, Shimano or SRAM? Electric shifting, thoughts? My personal choices are clincher for road, tubie for CX. SRAM for now but Shimano Electro fricken rocks! So there could be a change coming.

Now to the meat of it…

How does one become a pro mechanic for a professional cycling team? There are a few paths to the greatness of driving rigs across the country and hanging out in the national’s coolest parking lots. Mine started as temp mechanic in a shop in NorCal around 28 years ago. I was building Schwinns for the Christmas holidays and they asked me to stay on. I then moved out of that store and into one of the largest Specialized dealers in the country as their buyer and shop manager.

For many of us on the road, we started in shops and worked our way around and honed our skills. There is a lot of difference between a shop wrench and a team wrench. At a shop you work on a customer’s bike many times - that bike is for pleasure riding. With team bikes, this is the racers livelihood. If you make a mistake and that rider loses or worse, crashes and gets hurt due to you, it can be bad. Also team wrenches are working on each bike as if it were their own and many times, depending on the program, can work on 12-25 bikes at any given time. The pressures are much different and a shop wrench gets to go home every night. There are many times I can remember sleeping with 10+ bikes in my hotel room, oh the glamour.

How many mechanics does a team keep on staff? Are roles specialized? Is there a hierarchy among mechanics? At any given time US programs can have up to 3 wrenches. Most that get to go to Tour of California need at least 3 wrenches. Most will have 2 team cars in the caravan. One in the front part of the caravan and one at the back. Each car will have one mechanic. The third will have to drive the team truck to the end of the stage. Each team has a head mechanic, generally the one with the most experience, and he will be in the lead caravan car with the director of that team.

What is the biggest challenge on race day for pro mechanics? There can be two challenges to race mechanics on race day. One is fatigue, mental and physical. Working a multi-day stage race can get taxing on mechanics. We generally are the first up and the last to go to bed. When the riders are tucked into their beds and sleeping, the Gods of the Parking lot can at times work late into the night. The interesting thing about this is that those that have well oiled mechanics working for them, they are so well organized that their task list for the day is done when the sun goes down. Very rarely do you see seasoned mechanics like Damo Shanks from Garmin or Vince Gee from Team Radio Shack in the lot after dark.

The other race day challenge can be from the riders themselves. More times than I care to remember, a rider has come to me 5 min before the start wanting to make a change to their bike. Sometimes they are little tweaks and other times they are not.

For components like bars and stems, are you okay with carbon? I think George Hincapie’s Roubaix crash a few years ago still makes people a bit cautious. The reality is, pro riders like Lance and George and most of the peloton do not use carbon bars and stems. They like the comfort of having an alloy bar and stem. With Georges failed steer tube during Paris Roubaix, that crack happened earlier in the race coming out of the Forest of Arenberg. Also that was not a carbon steer tube but an alloy one. Trek at the time was not making forks with alloy steer tubes. As a matter of fact they were one of the last companies to add carbon to the steer tubes.

You hear about crazy things mechanics do in support cars, i.e. hanging out the window with allen key sets, fixing derailleur’s. Have you had an experience like this? I have hung out of the car a few times. USA Cycling and the UCI frown on such actions from race mechanics. The race officials will fine a team if they catch their mechanics hanging from the car. Fortunately the few times I did it the officials were looking the other way.

On that same note, last year during Stage 4 of Tour of California, Levi had a bike failure and was calling for a Neutral Service Mavic bike. Since I was driving one of the Mavic cars that day and we had the bike that was Levi's size on the car, my Jumper (also known as the mechanic in the back) was hanging out of the car while we were descending one of the twistyest sections of that days stage, he was trying to set the saddle height and put on pedals. Levi finished the stage on his back up bike and the neutral bike was never called on.

What are your top mechanic tips for the average weekend warrior? My biggest tip is to come prepared for everything. The one time you leave that one specialty tool, will be the time you get that freaky rider with the ancient rig asking you to fix something.

Focus seems to be a relatively new brand to most in the U.S., but apparently it’s been around for a while in Europe and was started by a pro cyclocross racer. Could you tell us a bit about Focus? Some highlights from 2010 line up? Focus is a new brand to the US, say 5 months. As a global brand we have been around for 18 years and have dominated the Euro market for the last 5. Our biggest strengths are our attention to detail, being Germany it is no wonder, and our driven need to be the best.

The company was founded by Mike Kluge over 18 years ago and 10 years ago we were bought by Derby Cycle that is the parent company of Focus, Diamond Back and Raleigh. Focus is the primary brand for Derby and it was their vision and desire to move to the US market.

In 2010 you will see innovations in carbon frame design that has been played with over the years but never perfected until now. Many compans have been trying to produce a frame that uses internal cable routing, and they have failed. This year Focus will be showcasing a new way to do internal routing by the use of Carbon Tunneling.

We use a teflon coated tunnel that is wrapped in carbon and becomes part of the frame. It is a clean system that uses the least amount of friction and provides the best possible shifting and braking. The carbon MTB bikes use the same system and even the hydraulic brake housing is routed through the frame.

I am happy to be part of the Focus family and happy to be taking on a new role in 2010 as the head of training and field marketing for Focus Bikes USA. It was be a ton of fun coming to events and spreading the word about Focus.

Winter Cross Race

For me, it's pretty hard to stay motivated without a race highlighted on the calendar. I know I should be putting in the miles, but without a race to focus on I tend to opt for the couch rather than the trainer. It's bad, I know. I've been itch'n for another cross race since States. So much so, I've emailed and called a couple promoters trying to find something, anything. I was told "wait", "be patient", "something in the works" in Boulder. I was also told that a race was being planned in Fort Collins and it will be announced last minute, "don't make plans". Low and behold...

Chasing Points with the Team

This past weekend the only points race was Sunday, up in the Mountains, in Buena Vista - Cross at the River. It was a no brainer, this would be a great place to do well. The non-points race was the first Boulder Cyclocross Race (on Saturday). Boulder Racing always does a great job and their races are top notch so I was expecting turnout for their race to be crazy, making the Sunday race... less attended and a potential opportunity for me to catchup and earn some BCR points.

My guess was right, 93 racers toed the line for the Boulder race in my category! 93! Wow. The ACA had so many problems with lapped riders they had to take extra time to get the results out. I'm sure it was a lot of fun but it's hard to get good results in a race like that.

Sunday, two other teammates and I made the drive to Buena Vista. Yes it was a long drive, almost silly for a cyclocross race, but it was great to ride with friends I don't get to see enough. All of us have active families making extra time hard to find. It was a great coarse, right next to the Arkansas river. It had everything, run ups, grass, pavement, barriers, sand, wind and low humidity. Only 24 racers showed up in my category, sad but when your looking for points the odds are in your favor.

The three of us were nervous for the start but all of us got 1st and 2nd row starting positions. The first lap I just tried to be patient (see previous race posts). I actually didn't want to be alone because there were some long drags into the wind. Having someone to race with would be helpful. It felt like people were just dropping off the pace. By half way through the second lap I was spit out the front in third place. The first two were working together and gone. I had a big gap but it felt like no mans land, and it was, I hit it. Maybe I could help my teammates by allowing them to sit on others wheels. Maybe I could hold it?

In the end I was caught by a few people but I still finished in 6th place. To cap things off my teammates were in 9th and 14th! Great results for all of us! We got in a nice cool down and enjoyed a beer while laughing and telling stores about the race.

All in all, I had a great time. Fun suffering with friends and enjoying the conversation during the drive. Next year I hope more people go to this race. It was well done and deserves more attendance.

ACA hasn't updated the BCR/BCT points yet but we should move up a little.

This morning my daughter Kailee had a goal. She's been sick all week but got up, got dressed and went outside to learn how to ride her "2-wheel bike". (Her neighbor friend learned how to ride yesterday and she watched from her window)

Within about 30 minutes and doing it by herself she got it.

Must be genetic, notice any similarities? She's only been riding a few hours!

Exciting times are ahead! I am so proud of her!

Last week on my commute home I ran into another TER member along the Platte River trail. He's new to the team and excited to be a part of it all. We got to chat for a few minutes before going our separate ways.

A little while later I picked up my daughter from day camp and we were driving through Highlands Ranch. We come up and over a hill and my daughter yells "Daddy! That man has the same shirt as you!" I get a quick look over to see the esteemed Kevin Skruch out of the saddle powering up over the hill.

This past Saturday I drove SAG for a friend at the Triple Bypass. I saw at least a dozen TER jerseys and got to talk to a handful of them. With such a big team, it's not hard to figure out why I see our jerseys all over town. Keep riding and wearing those team kits!

Cat 4 Women's Mentoring

This weekend sees the return of the highly successful Women's Mentoring Program for Cat 4 women. The goal of the program is to encourage beginner female racers to try bike racing and gain skills necessary for participation and success.

During these mentoring races elite female Cat 1 and 2 riders will ride with the Cat 4 Women's field to provide instruction in a supportive and encouraging manner.

Before and after the races the experienced race mentors will be available to answer questions about rules of racing, race tactics, and riding skills.

Road Race Clinic

Team Evergreen Racing will be presenting a road racing clinic for all current members. The clinic will be presented by Jonathan Siegel of JDS Sport Coaching, LLC. Jonathan founded JDS Sport Coaching in 2000 and regularly partners with the ACA to develop programs and host clinics for racers.

The clinic will take place the weekend of May 16-17 at a location to be determined. The clinic will consist of a Saturday evening session where we will discuss team vs. individual goals, team tactics and strategies for assessing opponents. The Sunday session will have 2 hours of skills (rubbing, bumping, pacelines, echelons, etc.) followed by a 2 hour race simulation.

This clinic is for any 2009 member of Team Evergreen Racing and the cost is only $20 for the first 20 racers to register. Any registrations over the first 20 will cost $40 so register early to save a few bucks. You don't need to be racing any road events to attend. Registration is due by May 13th. Monday Evening Team Rides

In an effort to get more folks together and ride (this becomes harder as the racing increases frequency), we will have some Monday Evening Recovery Rides

What: This will be a recovery ride (aka little ring). Pace will be slow and conversation high. Come enjoy the ride. All are welcome. This will be a good place to meet your teammates, get more info about the team and enjoy riding with friends.
When: Monday, May 4th, 11th and 18th at 5:30pm
Where: Golden, 11th and Illinois

The Ride: 1-2 hours depending on the route. Route will likely change each week. (No lookout or other major climbs)
Bikes: We will be on the road but Mountain bikes shouldn't be an issue as long as they can keep up with ~15mph.

The meeting location is near downtown Golden, food and beers are not far away after the ride.

Deer Trail - 2009

17 TER racers toed the line this past Saturday in Deer Trail.

This is my story:

This past Saturday morning I hooked up with a couple of teammates (Jeremy and Rick) and carpooled out East to Deer Trail, CO. A small town east of Denver that has been gracious enough to host a bunch of Lycra clad, carbon fiber loving, two wheeled, front range crazies. The site of the first 2009 road race (nearly the first mass start race as everything else has been canceled due to weather).

The weather, compared to last year, was calm and warm! (10-15 mph winds, starting temp ~38 F) We had an 8:30 am start, with 74 pre-registered riders. We arrived with plenty of time to get our numbers and gear ready. Organizers were passing out two numbers, one for your jacket and one for your jersey (as apposed to each side of your jersey like last year). Simplifying the clothing selection for the day. This year I went with the standard kit, knee warmers, arm warmers, a base layer, standard fingerless gloves and my good wind vest. It proved perfect.

My goals for this race, don't expect too much. Last year I finished 6th, I figured it was all down hill from there. I didn't know how my fitness would holdout, this would be the test. I wanted to get more comfortable in the pack, work on my positioning in the group and give pointers to my team to try and help as many of my teammates get to the end as quickly as possible.

The race rolled out of town at a leisurely pace. Another teammate rolled by me and asked if they always raced this slow. We were about a mile out, I told him to relax and enjoy it, it was going to heat up soon enough! The course profile had almost not flat spots. Nothing but short rollers. The 43 mile race gained over 2000 ft in elevation. The pace picked up on the climbs setting the ground for a hard up the hills easy down the other side kind of race.

This race is basically laid out in the shape of the letter L. Out and back on the lower section then out and back on the upper and finally out and back on the lower section to the finish. A key to this race is good positioning on the 180 degree turn arounds. The first guys make it through easily and sprint up to speed, the tail of the group is still breaking to get around. Then they really have to chase. Life is better at the front.

A guy went of the front at the first turn around. My first though was, now way dude, see you in a little while. But his teammates didn't chase him down (that happens a lot), a couple of them were actually strong enough to stay at the front and block. Since this was a cat 4 race, none of the other teams knew how to organize. Therefore there was no organized chase, making the blockers job even easier. To my amazement, the dude stayed away and won by about 20 seconds.

As for me, I managed to stay in the lead group until nearly the last climb. I had to close a couple of gaps and my position could have been better at times. I see some areas I need to improve my fitness but I have time.

Finishing time: 2:01, Place 18th of 67 finishers, Normalized power: 286W, Max: 1148W, distance 43 miles, average speed 21.1 mph, max speed 40.2 mph

About a dozen members who joined after the deadline will not receive their kit because I can not fill a complete order for them, but our 2nd order should arrive soon, and then I can fill the orders for these members. This will also contain the accessory items; jackets, vests, skinsuits, etc. All of these will be shipped out to you as soon as I get them.

"Even though I just said below to expect a gap in posts here, while on the plane today I had some thoughts about basic assumptions regarding training for endurance sport. These certainly aren’t earth-shaking thoughts but they lead in a direction that perhaps you hadn’t thought of before. So I thought I’d share them with you before my next flight.

1. Training must be physically stressful. The whole purpose of training is to physically and appropriately challenge the body. From this challenge the body adapts and becomes more capable of handling a given level of stress. To be effective the training challenge should be specific to the stress anticipated in the goal event for which you are training.

2. Adaptation to a specific physical stress is called “fitness.” This puts to rest old arguments about who is more fit - a golfer, weight lifter or marathoner. Each is equally fit for the unique physical demands of their sports. For example, if you want to define fitness as the physical skill required to hit a ball a long way with a stick then the golfer is the fittest.

3. Another product of stress is fatigue. If you challenge the body many physiological changes other than fitness can occur. You may have depleted carbohydrate stores, damaged muscle cells, altered body chemistry, etc. Taken as a whole these changes are called “fatigue.”

4. Fitness and fatigue trend similarly. You may not have thought about this before, but it is important to understand. There is a strong link between fitness and fatigue. If you are fatigued from training then you stressed the body adequately enough to create the potential for fitness. If the workout did not cause any fatigue at all then it also did not produce the potential for fitness. So, when fatigue is rising you can expect the same thing from fitness.

5. In order to race well one must reduce fatigue. This is what tapering before a big race is all about – reducing fatigue. You don’t want to go into important races tired. There is no benefit from doing that. Racing when tired most assuredly will produce less-than-stellar performances.

6. Reducing fatigue is called “coming into form.” The term “form” came from late-nineteenth-century horse racing. Before placing a bet you would check the form (sheet of paper) provided by the bookie which showed how each horse had been racing recently. When a horse was racing well it was said to be “on form.” Bike racing which started in the late nineteenth century adopted this term early on. In recent years other endurance sports have begun using it.

7. Coming into form requires losing fitness. This is where I was taking you with the above assumptions. Don’t believe me? Then go back to #4. The bottom line is that you must give up some fitness in order to shed fatigue and therefore race at the highest levels. The trick is to limit and control how much fitness is lost in the tapering process. I’ve probably put more time and thought into this single aspect of race preparation than any other. But what I do is far from perfect. Peaking is as much an art as a science. The protocol I use isn’t 100%. This is described in my books. It may work for a given athlete for one race but not as well for the next. That’s because we are humans and not machines. There are many variables in our lives. Actually, I’m glad it’s that way."

The clinic will take place the evening of Wednesday, April 1^st at Cherry Creek State Park. This is the Wednesday before the start of the Karen Hornbostel Memorial TT series. Racers can expect a presentation and discussion with Coach Frank followed by a short ride on the course. Come prepared with your bike and TT gear.

Beth Wrenn-Estes, Race Director of the Bob Cook Memorial/Mt. Evans HillClimb announced today that effective January 1, 2009 management of the HillClimb would pass to Team Evergreen Racing, the racing division of the Team Evergreen Bicycle Club.

After an incredible 28 year run as Race Director of the Bob Cook
Memorial Hill Climb, Beth Wrenn-Estes has graciously named Team
Evergreen Racing as the successor to this legacy. Team Evergreen
Racing is proud to be the new race promoter, and has designated
David Newcomer to serve as Race Director effective, January 1st.
The Mt. Evans Hill Climb was run for the first time in 1962. The race
has been held 41 times with only three years cancelled, twice due
to snow and once when the Race Director was working in Atlanta at
the 1996 Summer Games.
The race was renamed in 1981 in honor of five-time race winner
Bob Cook, who died of cancer at the age of 23. Bob Cook held the
course record from 1975-1980. The first three years he held the
record he was a junior. The present record holder is Tom Danielson,
set in 2004 with a time of 1:41:20. The Senior Women's course
record is held by Jeannie Longo from France with a time of 1:59.19.
The climb is 28 miles in length.
The race starts at 7,540 feet in front of the Clear Creek Middle
School in Idaho Springs and proceeds to Echo Lake where the race
turns and climbs to the summit (14,264 feet.). The race is capped at
1,200 entrants and an average of 600-1,000 riders compete each
year.
This year's event will take place one week after the Triple Bi-Pass
on July 18th. Information is available at www.bicyclerace.com.

2009 ACA BAR/BAT

There will be new categories for BAR/BAT road races. SM 35+/3 and SM45+/4. These new categories passed in the ACA board by a vote of 7-2. Looks like the board is a strong supporter of Masters racing and is following the growing and changing demographics of ACA members. This should be good news for TER as most of our member will benefit from these categories.

Second major change, to limit the long race days the ACA has approved the three color coded race day. Basically, all categories will be split up. Not all categories will be offered at these races. IMPORTANT NOTE: This only effects BAR/BAT closed coarse races (mostly crits).

TER Fit 'Party' at Green Mountain Sports

We will have a Fit 'Party' for our Primal clothing at Green Mountain Sports on January 5 at 7:00 pm. Available to try will be Mens Bibshorts, Womens shorts, jerseys, longsleeve jerseys, skinsuits and warmers. The Primal sizing for shorts/bibs is considerably different from last years Pactimo - the Primals run Large. The Primal jersey sizing is similar: Large Primal = Large Pactimo. So try to make this event to insure the accuracy of your clothing order.

We will also be unveiling Primal's renderings of our new clothing design. So please stop by and check out our 2009 kit.

BTW, membership applications and corresponding membership deadline is Jan. 31, 2009.

Velodrome in Boulder OPEN!

For those of you that didn't know, there is an indoor velodrome in Boulder that just opened last week. It is a full wooden track within a large warehouse. I went out there today and got signed up for an intermediate class. They told me the beginner class would not be appropriate if I had already done some road races. Anyway, they hooked me up with a nice new track bike (included in the cost of the class) and away I went. (just bring your pedals, shoes and helmet)

It was a blast!!!! The track bike was pretty awesome! For those that have not ridden a fixed gear bike before, it really is not very difficult to get used to. Climbing up on the banking of the Velodrome was a little intimidating the first couple of times but it soon became very easy. The high banks are a great way to control your speed and move off the head of a paceline. To the left is a photo of the class I was in.

On the right is a photo of turn one with a rider to provide some scale. The guy in the upper right of the photo is on a second level balcony.

Looks like another way for people to enjoy racing their bikes. It was a lot of fun and I hope to see more Team Evergreen Racers at the Track.

The ACA is having a BAR/BAT Discussion on Jan 10th 2009 at the REI in Boulder.

There are a lot of things at stake for TER!! You the racers should know about the proposed changes and plan to attend if you want your voice heard.

THIS IS NOT A VOTING MEETING, IT IS TO SPEAK TO THE ACA BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONCERNING CHANGES THAT ARE COMING FOR THE 2009 RACE SEASON.

The problem: The race day has become too long for race officials.

Existing proposals:
1. New race categories have been suggested for SM 35+/3 and SM45+/4. These are the largest and only growing membership categories for the ACA. Having these categories does not solve the problem. BAR/BAT racing would be split up so that not everyone gets to race every race. Everyone has the same number of BAR/BAT races but everyone has a fewer total number of them (1/3).
2. Change masters racing to an A, B, C, D category system. Age is not considered, only speed. If you are old and slow, you race with the new and slow racers. Only criteria is that you are old enough to be a masters racer (age to be determined). You move up the scale as you get faster and back down as you get slower.

Events at the ACA Annual meeting: Race folks were not very supportive of proposal number 1. They don't like having the new categories. Despite these being growth areas in ACA membership. There is a lot of fear that this will dilute existing categories and increase length of the racing day. Proposal 2 was new/radical and maybe a little too much of a change, people wanted to think about it.
